Your fitness mindset is one of the biggest factors in determining your success, especially as a mom. What you do and say isn’t only subject to yourself. Little eyes are watching and little ears are listening to what you do and say about fitness, health, weight, etc. This post isn’t so much about leading by example but I can’t help but put that in there. Your mindset affects more than just yourself, it affects everyone in your path.
The way you think about fitness and your health journey is honestly one of the most important determining factors in seeing results. I see this a lot with my clients.
For example, my clients daily to-do’s usually consist of the following; get 8-10k steps, hit a protein + calorie goal, drink 80 oz of water, and workout or rest depending on the day. This is all it takes to lose weight and see results, but we’re humans so simple things are never really that simple unfortunately.
Until we do some mindset work, this task list will seem like a daunting and then they’ll feel like a failure on day one. What’s a coach to do to help?
I put their protocol in their dashboard because these women have B.H.A.G-big hunkette audacious goals. We are setting the stage for their future self but they can’t see past all of their obstacles. They are capable of doing these things, they only need to clear the cobwebs of their minds to be able to put in the work!
1. How do we clear the cobwebs?
- We show them that others have gone before them and smashed the goal their after. That’s where a really good coach comes in. A good coach understands the struggles of their clients and an even better coach has been where they are or has helped someone like them time and time again. I am a coach that is literally in the trenches with my clients as a work from home homeschooling mom to four little boys ages one to six years old!! We all have obstacles and limitations for this reason or that. I am a testimony that it can be done as a fellow mom who lost 30+lbs. It can be done.
- We change our A.N.T.s, automatic negative thoughts. Everyone has them even the most positive people. “I’m so stupid, why did I say that.” “I’m lazy.” “I can’t do anything right.” “I’m not as pretty as her.” The difference in people who achieve a positive mindset and those who maintain a negative one? Changing the narrative in their head. The bible says to take every thought captive, and so I encourage my clients to read through 100 biblical affirmations, pick at least 10 to write down on notecards, and place them all over their house, in their cars, and anywhere they are frequently, like the screensaver on their phone!
2. Non-negotiables
The next big thing we tackle for mindset with clients is their non-negotiables. These are things that the client will not let the sun go down on them until they do it. This in the beginning of their journey is something simple like drinking their water goal. They still have the other tasks that would ideally be done but life happens…creating new habits that stick can be very difficult in the beginning. The non-negotiable serves as a way for them to show up for their goals everyday no matter what without the pressure of having to be perfect at everything all at once. They can go to bed still feeling accomplished and ticking the meter a little closer to achieving their goal.
As one non-negotiable becomes easier, we tack on the next one until eventually they’ve made each task second nature. One day at a time they are getting a little better and a little closer to the destination. Yay!!
3. There is always a solution
In the midst of our struggles in life, we can often feel like there’s no way out. You’ve been overweight for years, you’ve tried everything or so you think. We are usually blind to the solutions available to us. Why is this? Well, a few main things come to mind.
- Our emotions cloud logical thinking.
- Lack of knowledge surrounding proper nutrition-often from misinformation from social media or what Sally down the street said- and how to create efficient workouts that will get you toned in all the right places.
- Your life experience leads to less creative problem solving because you think you’ve tried everything already.
- You don’t have a supportive community and get shot down when you try do better
Sometimes, we just need a supportive person in our life that is not involved leading them to be logical and creative in problem solving.
Closing thoughts
Having someone in your corner is highly recommended when you start out on your fitness journey, whether it is a friend who has done it or a coach who has helped others accomplish their goals. I err on the side of coach obviously. A lot of times, we can’t get out of our own head to see things clearly and an outside voice is necessary to succeed in helping to implement strategies that get you closer to your goal.
